Smart Home

Technology has become a prominent part of one’s everyday lifestyle; very few people will be seen without a smart device. The capabilities of these smart devices are enormous and with technology rapidly growing, it is difficult not to introduce technology into other aspects of life. Initially, smart devices pertained to cell phones and devices made for on the go. Now, smart devices are creeping into home life of individuals.

The technologically advanced homes are referred to as Smart Homes. The purpose is to increase the quality of living, safety and efficient usage of energy based on remote controlled gadgets and installations as well as automatic processes. The term Smart Homes is usually paired with Intelligent Living. This refers to utilising gadgets with additional features for connection of data and remote control. In other words, the entire concept of Smart Homes and Intelligent Living is to use technology to provide a more convenient way of living.

Smart home is not, by any means, a new concept, but it has been developing for a while. There are two possibilities for the starting point of Smart Homes, and this depends entirely on one’s perception on what constitutes a Smart Home. The first possibility is based on the perception of introducing technology into one’s home; this started in 1915. Simple technology, to us at least, were brought into homes to help with the workload. The type of machines ranged from sewing machines, food processors and so forth. The other possibility is based on the perception of a connection between appliances. During 1970s there was a system that enabled communication between appliances. Thus, history shows that Smart Homes have been around for quite some time.

The devices in the early stages of Smart Homes might not appear quite as smart as what we perceive to be smart technology, but as time progresses so does the advancements. Today’s concept of smart technology is ultimately the idea of technology being able to function or conduct tasks with a simple command. For instance, being able to play music without ever pushing a button. The possibilities have become endless and it has been implemented into different devices for society’s pleasure.  The number of devices available for Smart Homes are too numerous to count.

Due to the plethora of smart devices available, there is, at the very least, one item for every room; from hallways to kitchen to the bathroom there is something that can be technologically improved. Each Smart Home device has a general purpose; the way it contributes to a Smart Home. There are five terms that describe the purpose of the device; Building Automation, Smart Metering, Home Appliance Automation, Connected Home Automatics and “Peace of Mind”-Systems. These five purpose are not constricted to one area of the home and has the possibility of appearing anywhere.
